Children, Youth and International Development

This programme caters specifically for those working, or interested in working, in the field of children, youth and international development. The course will equip students with the conceptual understanding and breadth of empirical knowledge that will enable them to critically evaluate policy and practice in the area of children, youth and development and give them the skills necessary to design and undertake research relating to children, youth and development.

Entry requirements

A UK 1st or 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent internationally recognised qualification in a social science, education studies, childhood studies, youth work, international relations, development studies or related discipline; other disciplines and qualifications with relevant experience in international development work or work with children or young people will be considered on an individual basis and an interview may be required; applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6 in all areas); TOEFL paper-based test 580 (with a minimum of 4.5 in the test of written English); TOEFL internet-based test 92 (with a minimum of 20 in reading, listening, speaking and writing); Pearson 58 (with a minimum of 51 in all areas); or BruneELT 65 per cent (with a minimum of 60 per cent in all areas).

Course modules

Modules include: international development, childhood and youth; young lives in the global south; global agendas on young people, rights and participation; researching children, childhood and youth; dissertation. Optional modules: sociology of youth and youth work; contemporary issues in youth and community work; social policy; anthropology of education and learning; anthropological perspectives on war and humanitarianism; psychological development; applied learning (placement).

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include: essays; exams; oral presentations; debates; student-led seminars; reports.
