Cross-Cultural Psychology MSc

This course provides students with an understanding of how basic psychological processes may vary across cultures, and gives them the skills necessary to conduct their own research with different ethnic groups. The programme is specifically aimed at those who intend to pursue their psychological work in a number of different cultural settings, whether within Britain or overseas.

Entry requirements

A UK 1st or 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent internationally recognised qualification in a social sciences/psychology related discipline. Applicants with a 1st class or 2.1 degree in a non related subject with relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis. Applicants with a 2.2 Honours degree will be considered on an individual basis. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6 in all areas); TOEFL paper-based test 580 (with a minimum of 4.5 in the test of written English); TOEFL internet-based test 92 (with a minimum of 20 in reading, writing, listening, speaking and writing); Pearson 58 (with a minimum of 51 in all areas); or BruneELT 65 per cent (with a minimum of 60 per cent in all areas).

Course modules

Modules include: foundations of cross-cultural psychology; advanced topics in cross-cultural psychology; cross-cultural research methods; dissertation in cross-cultural psychology. Optional modules include: foundations of psychoanalytic theory; cognitive neuroscience; evolutionary psychology.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by coursework through the completion of term papers, seen examinations (given out at least a month before the examinations) and poster presentations; a dissertation of up to 15,000 words is then required. Students also give brief presentations in groups in class.
