Applied Positive Psychology

Students study wellbeing and optimal human functioning for individuals, groups, communities and organisations; applicants study the knowledge, skills and applications of positive psychology. A heavy emphasis is placed on supporting the use and application of the new knowledge and skills through personally-chosen projects that also form the basis of assessments; the programme covers primary theories and research in positive psychology, and their inter-relationships. The course provides structured opportunities through which students may explore and apply positive psychology in personally chosen areas; there are visiting experts in topics such as personal strengths, positive emotions, resilience and the processes and journey of human change.

Entry requirements

Applicants would normally have achieved a 2.1 Honours degree in a social science degree; alternatively, candidates may have professional qualifications and/or directly relevant work experience; an Honours degree in psychology is not a pre-requisite.

Course modules

Stage 1 (PGCert) modules: introduction to positive psychology (an exploration of happiness, flourishing and well-being); strengths-based development and engagement; positive subjective emotion; the psychology of hope and resilience.
Stage 2 (PGDip) modules: 2 research methods modules; plus 2 options from; pathways of change; the journey of change; mindfulness for the caring professions.

Assessment methods

Reflective journal, presentations and a dissertation.
