Social Work

Students study social work services and service users, the service delivery context, values and ethics, social work theory and the nature of social work practice; students study problem solving, communication skills, team working and research skills.

Entry requirements

Honours degree at 2.1 or above; a 2.2 Honours degree is considered with experience, knowledge, skills and aptitude in relation to social work; GCSEs in English and mathematics at grade C or above, or equivalent, i.e. numeracy and literacy at level 2 also required; English language requirements for international applicants are IELTS 7.0, or equivalent.

Year 1: advanced skills for professional development L720; social work in contemporary society; preparation for social work practice; practice learning 1; putting the law into practice; sociology, psychology and social policy for social work; putting the law into practice; preparation for intervention with service users; developing social work skills for practice; practice learning 1. Year 2: dissertation; advanced skills for professional development L710; service user groups theories and methods; inter professional practice; research methods; practice learning 2; dissertation; inter-professional practice; practice learning 2; research methods for social work.

Assessment methods

Assessment includes essays, examinations, portfolios, presentations and a final dissertation.
