Canterbury Christ Church University
Research is characterised by an emphasis on composition, performance, and the interface between them; the profile of musicology in the department is also strong, with an emphasis on various areas of 20th-century musicology and early music; further, the relationship between music and health is the focus of a major cross-faculty research project in arts and health, and the department is also home to important research in instrumental teaching and learning. Research degrees differ from taught degrees in that most of the students' time is devoted to the individual pursuit of a research project. The students work independently carrying out research, experimentation and data-gathering in their chosen field. However, each student's supervisors will provide close support and mentoring throughout.
A relevant undergraduate degree 1.1 or 2.1 and strong academic references.
For an MPhil the students are required to demonstrate that they can conduct an original investigation, test ideas - those of their own and others - and understand the relationship between the topic investigated and the wider field of knowledge. For a PhD, in addition to the above, the student's thesis should also make an original contribution to knowledge or understanding in their field of study.
