Secondary Education (Mathematics, 11-18)
This programme prepares graduates for the demands of teaching the 11-18 age range in the secondary education sector; on successful completion of the programme, students are awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), enabling them to teach in schools.
2.2 Honours degree in a subject related to mathematics, or, in some exceptional cases, an unrelated degree if applicant has worked in employment or activities related to mathematics; candidates with experience in business and industry, where the work has enhanced applicants knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematics; candidates with limited subject knowledge are welcome to apply, but may be offered a place on the course subject to their satisfactorily completing a mathematics enhancement course (MEC); places on a MEC are only available to people who have been offered a place on a PGCE course; GCSEs (grade C or above) in English language and mathematics (or equivalents acceptable to the University); a minimum of 10 days recent and relevant state school experience on application. Applicants are strongly encouraged to have passed skills tests in literacy and numeracy prior to an interview.
Modules include: Professional placement � module 1; professional studies � module 2; curriculum studies in mathematics � module 3; enhanced studies � module 4.
Assessment is through a combination of professional placements and course work.
