Middle Years (Physical Education, 7-14)
The programme aims to prepare graduates for teaching the 7-14 age range in the primary and secondary sector; on completion of the course students are awarded a PGCE and recommended for Qualified Teacher Status; the Curriculum Studies part of the course involves work in 2 related strands: practical concept-based workshops and seminars, which together enables students to develop a clear personal rationale, and practical strategies for teaching physical education (PE); in the practical workshops, students examine and explore key concepts that underpin the various curricula and syllabi for PE; the seminars allow discussion of different pedagogies and allow critical reflection on differing approaches to the subject.
2.2 Honours degree in a subject related to physical education; GCSEs (grade C or above) in English language, mathematics and science (before the PGCE course begins), or equivalents acceptable to the University; applicants must also be able to show that they have secure content knowledge in at least 2 of the following activity areas; athletics; games; gymnastics, dance, swimming, outdoor and adventurous activities, and have undertaken at least 10 days observation in a state primary and secondary school prior to submitting an application. Applicants are also strongly encouraged to have passed skills tests in literacy and numeracy prior to an interview.
