Biological Sciences

Research degrees differ from taught degrees in that most of the students' time is devoted to the individual pursuit of a research project. The students work independently carrying out research, experimentation and data-gathering in their chosen field. However, each student's supervisors provides close support and mentoring throughout.

Entry requirements

A relevant undergraduate degree 1st or 2.1 and strong academic references.

Assessment methods

For an MPhil the students are required to demonstrate that they can conduct an original investigation, test ideas (those of their own and others) and understand the relationship between the topic investigated and the wider field of knowledge. For a PhD, in addition to the above, the student's thesis should also make an original contribution to knowledge or understanding in their field of study.

Sponsorship information

Studentships offered each year, providing free tuition and maintenance stipend.
