English Literature and Creative Writing
The English part of the degree analyses historic and contemporary textual representations of place, theorising cultural practices of location and space and the effect of these on constructions of identity; the creative writing modules are specifically designed to develop the student as a writer of fiction; a critical but supportive environment is achieved through a combination of workshops, research seminars and e-learning; students are introduced to the practicalities of preparing and submitting work for possible publication.
1st or upper 2nd class Honours degree, in a relevant subject; students that meet the criteria may be invited for interview.
Modules include: literature and landscapes; writing the city; short story writing; novel writing; critical practice; researching humanities; dissertation.
Assessment is based on a variety of approaches; including written assignments; annotated bibliographies; synopsis of creative work; poster presentations; reflective blog; seminar presentations; portfolio; and a dissertation.
