Primary Education (7-11, Welsh medium)
This programme enables students to qualify as primary teachers with a specific age group focus in key stage 2 (7-11) whilst still able to teach across the primary age phrase; the programme is delivered and managed collaboratively between Cardiff Metropolitan University and partnership schools; in addition, specialist study is offered in a range of subjects; students receive ongoing support and guidance from an experienced personal tutor who mentors the individual through their academic and initial professional development; regular contact in university is maintained throughout school placement; students have the opportunity to develop an area of expertise relevant to the primary school; all students learn Welsh as part of the university based programme and approximately 25 per cent of our students are prepared for teaching posts in Welsh medium education.
GCSE grade B or above in English language and mathematics and grade C or above in science (or a standard equivalent); students studying to teach in Welsh medium schools also need a GCSE grade C or above in Welsh (1st language); Honours degree, of at least 2.2 classification, in an area related to primary education; for subject specialism, applicants are normally expected to have either a relevant A-level (or equivalent) at grade C minimum or a degree in the subject/area of expertise suitable for primary teaching; recent and relevant experience in a mainstream school across the primary age range for a minimum of 10 days (within the 12 months previous to attending interview) plus a letter of reference from this placement; interview which involves involve completion of time-constrained tests in literacy and numeracy; applicants wishing to undertake school placements in Welsh medium schools are interviewed through the medium of Welsh; entry is also subject to a satisfactory criminal records check.

Assessment is based on both practical teaching and university coursework.
