This programme has 7 specific pathways and can lead to the award of the specifically named degree: MSc advanced practice (audiology); MSc advanced practice (dietetics); MSc advanced practice (housing); MSc advanced practice (musculoskeletal studies); MSc advanced practice (public health emergencies); MSc advanced practice (speech and language therapy); MSc advanced practice (sport and exercise nutrition​).

Entry requirements

Candidates should hold an Honours degree in a discipline relating to their proposed area of study. However, candidates with other relevant qualifications will be considered. Candidates must normally be able to demonstrate a minimum of 2 years recent and relevant experience in an appropriate setting. Entry requirements for specific pathways: dietetics: candidates should be registered dietitians with the Health and Care Professions Council; speech and language therapy: candidates should be registered speech and language therapists with the Health and Care Professions Council; sports and exercise nutrition: candidates should have a 1st degree in dietetics, nutrition or sports and exercise science.

Course modules

Compulsory modules: reflection for professional practice; evidence based practice; applied research methods and design; dissertation. Optional generic modules: work based learning 1 and 2; assessing health, wellbeing and inequity; health risk perception & communication; public health policy development; health protection; frameworks for public health intervention; changing health behaviour; neuro linguistic programming; reflection on prior learning; teaching and learning in the workplace; clinical decision making; strategic leadership and management. Optional modules for audiology pathway: balance disorders and rehabilitation; industrial and environmental audiology; paediatric hearing impairment; advanced diagnostic audiology and rehabilitation; teaching and learning in the workplace. Optional modules for dietetics pathway: clinical educators course; advanced clinical educators course; nutrition in the older person; sport and exercise nutrition 1; sport and exercise nutrition 2. Optional modules for housing pathway: delivering the housing service; housing in context; housing as a business. Optional modules for musculoskeletal pathway: work based learning 1: musculoskeletal examination and diagnosis; pathological basis of musculoskeletal disorders; sports biomechanics and injury management; work based learning 2: musculoskeletal therapeutics. Optional modules for public health emergencies pathway: preventing, planning and preparing for- major incidents and events; practical evaluation of major environmental incidents and events; managing a major incident: public health response and recovery. Optional modules for speech and language therapy pathway: paediatric hearing impairment; advanced clinical phonology. Optional modules for sport and exercise nutrition: exercise physiology; sport and exercise nutrition 1; sport and exercise nutrition 2; professional practice.

Assessment methods

Each module is assessed by coursework; the type varies according to the modules and can include the completion of a portfolio, presentations, reflections, reports and case studies.
