This is a taught programme. The Certificate in Medical Toxicology aims to offer knowledge and expertise in the practical management of toxicological problems. The MSc and Diploma programmes in Medical Toxicology aim to offer knowledge and expertise in the broad principles underlying medical toxicology, and provides an understanding of the mechanisms by which drugs and other chemicals produce toxic effects and how these can be predicted, treated and, whenever possible, prevented.
Suitable for clinical pharmacologists in training, specialist registrars in other disciplines, those working in the pharmaceutical industry, those working in the National Poisons Information Services, pharmacists, nurses and other life science graduates.
The 1 year PgCert includes 3 modules and the 2 year PgDip includes 6 modules, each consisting of 5 pieces of work covering subjects such as: classification and epidemiology of poisoning; antidotes; analgesic poisoning; antidepressant poisoning; animal and plant toxins; psychoactive drugs; drugs affecting the autonomic system; household/industrial products; topical, herbal, homeopathic and over the counter medications; drug and chemical abuse; drug safety and pharmo vigilance; mechanisms of toxicity; major toxins; management and prevention of toxicity; poisonings and toxicovigilance; occupational and environmental Toxicology.
Assessment is by fortnightly written assessments and final essay for each study unit. MSc year candidates will undertake a project in the 3rd year, under supervision, and submit a dissertation of 20000 words. The project can be an audit, a research or a literature review.
