Sustainability and Adaptation in the Built Environment

Students develop a range of skills in streams tailored to the built environment and transformation planning. This allows students access to career relevant teaching in a highly topical and emerging field, with very real and present challenges. Study covers the transformation of essential systems of land-use, food production, political and economic governance, planning for transformation at the scale of the city and community; to energy flows in buildings, building performance and evaluation, energy provision, sustainable building materials and resources; the programme enables students to analyse and understand the causes, severity and urgency of climate change and how these factors influence sustainability and adaptation thinking, on both the strategy/planning level and also technical/buildings aspects of the built environment.

Entry requirements

A 1st degree. Students who do not possess formal qualifications but who can demonstrate that they have gained appropriate knowledge and skills equivalent to degree standard and that they will benefit from and contribute to the programme, may be accepted. Students may be admitted with advanced standing through the recognition of credit or the accreditation of experiential or certificated learning according to the University of East London Accreditation of (Experiential) Learning (A(E)L) policy. In the case of applicants whose 1st language is not English, then IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent) is required.

Course modules

Modules include: adaptation and sustainability concepts and planning; ecosystem services, land use and water and waste management; environmental adaptation sustainability politics and economics; cities and communities; energy flows and energy efficient design in buildings; energy provision; building performance assessment and evaluation; sustainable materials in the built environment.

Assessment methods

Dissertation is assessed on a portfolio of work, consisting of a research design proposal, dissertation and a viva.
