Media and Communications

This course offers a contemporary overview of the field of media and communications studies; it provides students with an advanced grounding in the social and political context of communications sociology, methodological approaches to researching the field, and advanced discussion of current media and communications debates.

Entry requirements

2nd Class Honours degree in a social science discipline; applicants with equivalent academic and professional experience are considered; non-native English speakers must hold 1 of the following; a 1st degree from an overseas institution recognised by the university as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, or GCE O-level/GCSE English language or English literature, grade C minimum, or Cambridge ESOL CPE at grade C or above, or an overall score of 6.5 in the IELTS with a minimum of 6.0 for each subtest, or a score of 600 minimum (computer score 250) in the TOEFL, or satisfactory standard in the verbal section of the Princeton Test (GMAT), or US SAT with 500 in verbal performance, or WELT with pass grades of BBC minimum, or other evidence of proficiency in the English language which satisfies the board of studies concerned.

Core modules: media and communications theories; issues in media and communications research; approaches to social research; dissertation; electives: media information markets; developments in communications policy; political communication; democratisation, information and communication; representation and reception; transnational media and communication; culture and identity; globalising cities; rights, multiculturalism and citizenship; analysing media discourses; communication, culture and development; media and human rights; transnational communications and transcultural studies; theories of race and ethnicity.

Assessment methods

Coursework and dissertation.
