Health Management

The course provides the strategic management and leadership skills for careers at the highest levels of management in organisations in the healthcare sector and associated industries. The course emphasises leadership, strategic thinking, change management and applied analysis of management issues, providing a foundation for a career in senior management. Applicants with prior experience come from a wide range of professions: medical professions; nursing and allied health professionals; service and general managers; clinical directors; commissioners; managers in the pharmaceutical industries and medical supplies; health insurance; social enterprises.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a lower 2nd class Honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution in a related field (business, management, economics or health-related subjects). Relevant employment experience or an indication of aptitude for health management are taken into consideration. Clinical qualifications and membership of professional bodies are also taken into consideration. For applicants whose first language is not English, 1 of the following qualifications is also required: IELTS: 7.0or TOEFL (internet based): 107.

Course modules

Core modules include: strategic management and planning; leading and managing change; leadership in health management; introduction to research methods and applied data analysis; dissertation. Elective modules include: quality management; marketing in healthcare; strategic commissioning; healthcare systems thinking; health economics; economic evaluation of healthcare; advanced economic evaluation of healthcare; health policy in Britain; politics, power and the health policy process; health systems organisation, financing and performance.

Assessment methods

Modules are assessed through a combination of group work, written coursework and examination. The assessment reflects the learning objectives of the modules.
