International Human Rights
The course gives you the opportunity to examine intellectually the subject from various angles - minority protection, human rights at times of war, the prosecution of international criminals, to name a few. It helps the student appreciate and understand how international law intervenes to protect human rights and where the gaps are in international law. The course provides you the opportunity to study from established international law scholars at the City Law School some of the most significant issues in international human rights protection facing the world today.
Applicants should hold a good first degree in law, or an equivalent qualification in a related discipline, and must be fluent in written and spoken English. We expect applicants who are not nationals of a majority English-speaking country OR have not successfully completed an academic qualification, at least equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree, which was taught in a majority English-speaking country as defined by the UK Visas and Immigration, to have an overall IELTS score of at least 7.0.Applicants with a first degree in a subject other than law will be considered, but it should be noted that this may restrict the choice of modules where content is dependent on a prior knowledge of law.
Modules include: Public international law; international criminal law: crimes, courts and trials; international human rights in law and practice; international law and the use of force; law and war; minorities and indigenous peoples in international law.
Assessment will draw on a range of approaches which include written coursework, presentations, skills work, in-class tests, projects and a dissertation. The purpose of this is to assess a range of different skills and knowledge, as well as exposing you to different approaches. The majority of modules will be assessed on the basis of written coursework of 5,000-5,500 words.
