Grantmaking, Philanthropy and Social Investment

This charity degree course is the first of its kind in the UK and Europe and reflects the increasing interest in funding and the need for transparency and accountability. Students will hold responsible positions within funding organisations wishing to gain a professional academic qualification.

Entry requirements

MSc: Students will normally have a good first degree (2:1 or above), a related professional qualification or at least three years, wholly relevant experience. If you have more than three years' relevant experience, two professional references are acceptable. Overseas students are welcome to apply to these courses, but need to be aware that they cannot be sponsored for Tier 4 Study visas due to the part-time modular delivery of the course. In order to participate fully in the collaborative learning process all students who have not previously studied in English must sit an IELTS exam. The required IELTS level is an average of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in writing. If you are not a native English speaker but have been studying in the UK for the last three years it is unlikely you will need to take the test. Please submit a copy of your most recent English language test/qualification along with your application and a decision will be made by the Admissions Panel.

Course modules

Learning and Understanding the Voluntary Sector; Strategy, Diversity and Governance; Marketing & Fundraising; Resource Management; Principles and Practices of Grantmaking; Management of Grantmaking; and Fieldwork exercise.

Assessment methods

Upon successful completion of the diploma, you will be given the option to continue to the MSc. This requires completion of the Research Methods for Managers module. This can be followed by a further six months of personal, supervised research and the presentation of a 15,000-word dissertation. Alternatively, you can opt to take a taught Masters which allows you to choose specialist modules from one of the other Charities programmes.
