Professional Practice

The PG-Cert in Professional Practice enables practitioners, from a wide range of backgrounds, to work together to develop the skills and knowledge required to become competent practitioners and leaders in professional practice and to develop professional skills, knowledge and understanding though work. The course is for professional practitioners who have completed the preceptorship period (or similar) and who have a commitment to the enhancement of personal and professional development in their own area of professional and/or clinical practice. Throughout the programme you will be encouraged, though critical reflective practice, to explore contemporary professional practice in your own field of practice and within a wider integrated and inter-professional context. The modules are designed to allow you to gain the maximum from your learning experiences, in, from and related to the workplace and your own area of professional practice. The programme enables your general progression via the General Professional Practice route, or the opportunity to specialise in one of the following areas: Neonatal, Midwifery, Intensive Care, and Cardiac Care The main aims of the programme are: to enhance your personal and professional development to encourage you to develop as a critical, reflective and flexible learner and to develop an enquiring, critical and creative approach to professional practice and life-long learning to enhance critical, analytical, professional, research and communication skills and promote the ability to relate these skills to your own area of professional practice to enhance your knowledge and understanding of effective team and inter-professional working relevant to work and integrated working practice to prepare you for leadership roles in professional practice In completing the PG-Certificate you will enhance your knowledge and understanding of effective team and inter-professional working, you will be motivated in your own personal and professional development; develop as a critical and reflective practitioner and gain critical insight into the evidence base surrounding your own area of professional practice.

Entry requirements

Postgraduate Certificate - PgCert: The minimum entry requirements for the Postgraduate Certificate Professional Practice will be: First Degree (minimum 2:2) and above OR evidence of higher level study undertaken within the last five years. Applicants will also have a clinical (or other) professional qualification, and ideally will have at least one year's relevant clinical / professional experience in a health or social care environment. English Requirements: A first degree from a UK University International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with a minimum score of 7 (minimum of 7 in all categories) Other evidence of proficiency in the English language

Course modules

The core module for the programme is Professional Leadership (APM032 15 credits HE7). Students working in specialist areas, and who wish to undertake subject specialist modules will complete specific modules to be awarded a PG-Certificate Professional Practice (with specialism). Each module will involve 150 learning hours. Some of this time will be spent on campus in the classroom, skills laboratory and library. Students are expected to come prepared to each classroom based session and will be provided with a range of learning materials to deepen their learning before and after the face-to-face teaching.

Assessment methods

Each module will include a module assessment and preparation work this assessment is included in the 150 hour total.
