Health and Community Development Studies

This course enables you to develop as an innovative, progressive practitioner able to engage reflectively with concepts and practices of social justice and equality. You will have experience of or be interested in using skills of group work, informal learning and activity, outreach and community work; particularly with young people and adults often identified as hard to reach.

Entry requirements

Applicants need to demonstrate that they can work at Master's level which can be done through having a 1st degree, normally at 2.2 or above, or by having a range of academic and work experience; they also are normally expected to have a professional qualification in an area related to youth and community development work; and also normally have: a commitment to anti oppressive practice; relevant and significant field experience on which to base and integrate theory; proven ability to reflect on practice, critically examine concepts of informal education and justice, awareness of social welfare needs in a youth and community context; those who have no formal academic qualifications but do have extensive practice experience can also be considered, on an individual basis; applicants also need to conduct an interview; for those who are unable to attend, arrangements can be made for a telephone interview; enhanced DBS certificate and self declaration form are required, (international applicants are required to submit a criminal records certificate from their home country) in accordance with DMU's admissions policy also; if English is not your 1st language an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent is essential; English language tuition, delivered by our British council accredited centre for English language learning, is available both before and during the course.

Course modules

Modules include: Theory and practice of community development; issues of health and well-being; health and social research methods; plus optional modules.

Assessment methods

Assessment is usually by written assignment of 4,000 words per module.
