Youth, Health and Community Development Studies

This course is designed for youth work and community development work practitioners seeking to explore health related topics prevalent in both generic work and specialist health education and development projects; it is not suitable for those wishing to explore community health or specific health care practice in the community; students must complete a dissertation in a health related topic identified in discussion with academic staff; this course enables the development of innovative, progressive practitioners to reflectively engage with concepts and practices of social justice and equality; this course is suitable for qualified practitioners with a flexible study programme allowing study alongside work; it provides an opportunity to study at an advanced academic and professional level; and enables the development of an innovative, progressive practitioner who reflectively engages with concepts and practices of social justice and equality.

Entry requirements

A 1st degree at 2.2 or above, or by having a range of academic and work experience; applicants are normally expected to have a professional qualification in an area related to youth and community development work. Those who have no formal academic qualifications but do have extensive practice experience are also considered on an individual basis; all applicants need to conduct an interview; for those who are unable to attend, arrangements can be made for a telephone interview; enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate and self declaration form are required, (international applicants are required to submit a criminal records certificate from their home country) in accordance with DMU's admissions policy; if English is not the 1st language an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent is essential; English Language tuition, delivered by our British Council accredited Centre for English Language Learning, is available both before and during.

Course modules

Modules include: Theory and practice of youth work; theory and practice of community development; health and social research methods; field practice; management of services and people.

Assessment methods

Assessment is usually by written assignment of 4,000 words per module.
