Youth Work and Community Development

The course offers flexibility with a professional qualification, enabling successful graduates to practice as qualified youth work and community development workers in the UK.

Entry requirements

A 1st degree at 2.2 or above, or by having a range of academic and work experience; applicants must be engaged in at least 12 hours appropriate work, paid or unpaid, per week. Students are normally expected to have a professional qualification in an area related to work. Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate and self declaration form are required, (international applicants are required to submit a criminal records certificate from their home country) in accordance with DMU's admissions policy.

Course modules

Modules include: Theory and practice of youth work; theory and practice of community development; health and social research methods; field practice; management of services and people.

Assessment methods

Assessment is usually by written assignment of 4000 words per module; field practice assessment requires written evidence, assignments and reports of competence from the supervisor.
