Design Management and Entrepreneurship

Students on this course apply their creative and analytical skills to a number of business and social contexts, ranging from small local businesses to multinational corporations and social enterprise. The course: examines international and global design and business issues, and develops specialist design management knowledge and skills; is ideal for those wishing to manage design teams and/or design processes; offers a vibrant interface with design, communication, business and brand management, research and marketing, including specialist design management fields such as brand management and service design; and enables graduates to enter the creative industries at a more strategic level.

Entry requirements

You should have the equivalent of a 2.2 or above UK Bachelors Honours degree in a related subject. If you have other professional qualifications and industry experience we will consider your application on an individual basis. If English is not your 1st language an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent when you start the course is essential.

Course modules

1st semester: students complete the following 3 core modules and choose 1 elective from a choice of 3: research methods; critical perspectives in design management; integrated brand management; choose 1 module from the following: marketing for the creative entrepreneur; strategic design for competitive advantage; 2nd semester: comprises 3 core modules and 1 elective from a choice of 4: service design; business planning for the creative entrepreneur; design as a strategic business tool; choose 1 module from the following: strategic markets for design in the global economy; design in political context; managing business web presence; the nature of creativity; sustainable design; 3rd semester: students carry out their own research project under supervision.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include report submissions, digital online submissions, individual and group presentations. Your final major research project will be assessed by a dissertation or a work-based project assessed by a written research proposal, detailed written report and an individual presentation.
