Media and Film Studies comprises a large and thriving team with a substantial number of early career researchers working in exciting and developing fields; areas of particular research excellence include British film and television history; cult film; media discourse; technology and culture; representation; gender and identity; creativity and practice; new media and trans literacy; the recent establishment of the Cinema and Television History Research Centre (CATH) demonstrates the outstanding achievements of Faculty staff working in that area; work on British cinema and television constitutes the core activity of the CATH Research Centre, but it also includes high quality research in European cinema and Hollywood history as well as work on contemporary policy, political economy and cultural and social impact that is grounded in the methodologies of historical research.

Entry requirements

For the MPhil: at least an upper 2nd Class Honours degree from a British university or equivalent academic or professional qualifications; international qualifications may also be acceptable; for direct entry to the PhD: UK Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area, which should have been awarded within 5 years prior to application, including a component dealing with research methods; an equivalent academic or professional qualification, including international qualifications, may be acceptable.
