Sport History and Culture

This course offers you a flexible, interactive way to develop your knowledge and understanding of sport and history. This course will give you a firm understanding of all aspects of modern sport from its traditional to its present day form.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 or above UK Bachelor's honours degree in a related subject such as history, sports studies or sociology. The University encourages and welcome applications from applicants with a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives, and all non-standard applications will be considered. If English is not the 1st language, applicants must have an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent. English Language tuition, delivered by our British Council accredited Centre for English Language Learning, is available both before and throughout the course.

Course modules

Modules include: What is sport?; sport and the media; presenting and representing the past making the modern world; sport in 20th century Britain; reading sport: text, paintings, film; mega events: heritage and history; history and the workplace; the sporting body: sex, drugs and disability; the Olympics; transatlantic sport: Europe and the USA, 1850-1940; dissertation

Assessment methods

Assessment is based primarily on written exams and a final year dissertation, and some modules will also include presentations and group work.
