Modern History

Research in history has developed around 2 especially well-defined clusters of expertise: the history of immigration, ethnic minorities and associated issues relating to national identity; and the cultural and social history of sport; the 1st of these is firmly based among colleagues teaching history in the department; the 2nd falls within the specialist remit of the International Centre for Sports History and Culture.

Entry requirements

For the MPhil: at least an Upper 2nd Class Honours degree from a British university or equivalent academic or professional qualifications; international qualifications may also be acceptable; for direct entry to the PhD: UK Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area, which should have been awarded within 5 years prior to application, including a component dealing with research methods; an equivalent academic or professional qualification, including international qualifications, may be acceptable.
