This is the conversion course for graduates in subjects other than law who intend to become solicitors or barristers. It is recognised by the SRA and BSB as satisfying the requirements of the academic stage of training. De Montfort University offers excellent facilities within a purpose-built building which includes an integrated legal library, mock courtroom, comprehensive IT facilities, client interviewing room and a bookshop.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree in any subject other than law; without a Honours degree students should have appropriate work experience and so will be considered, subject to professional body requirements; if English is not their 1st language, an IELTS score of 7.0 or equivalent is normally required; English language tuition is available both before and during the course if required; the Graduate Diploma in law, sometimes referred to as the Common Professional Exam (CPE), is a course that not everyone is eligible to undertake; the SRA (Solicitors Regulation Authority) and the Bar Standards Board (BSB) have set conditions for joining the GDL/CPE; it is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that they meet these conditions.

Course modules

Modules include: Criminal law; equity and the law of trusts; European union law; property law; public law; law of contract (obligations I); law of tort (obligations II).

Assessment methods

The prescribed foundation subjects are assessed by exams. The English legal system is assessed by a piece of coursework and the additional area of legal study by a 5,000-word assessed project. Students also have to complete an assessed legal research exercise and 1 further piece of coursework. Candidates that successfully complete all of the GDL assessments at their 1st sitting are guaranteed a place on the Legal Practice Course (LPC).
