There are a number of research areas, including: Medieval literature and culture; early modern literature and culture; 17th-century literature and culture; 18th-century literature and culture; 19th-century literature and culture; 20th-century and contemporary literature and culture; visual culture, film, photography; advanced photography studies; theatre, opera; media studies; gender studies, women's studies, feminism; critical theory; biography, autobiography; history (cultural, political, intellectual); language, history of language, rhetoric, translation studies; dialectology; phonetics, phonology; religious literature; text editing; music; other topics include: Catalan culture; censorship; environmental issues; Europe (ideas of); gypsies; Islamic philosophy; Latin American culture; parody; World War 2.

Entry requirements

Honours degree in a discipline appropriate to the programme; Master's degree usually required for PhD; all applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.5; or equivalent.

Assessment methods

The MA is assessed by a 50,000 word thesis and upon completion, students may progress to a PhD; the PhD is assessed by a 100,000 word thesis.
