Research in all major branches; current interests, organic chemistry, synthesis and chemistry of organofluorine compounds, synthesis and complexation of functionalised macrocycles, mechanisms of organic reactions, heterocyclic compounds, biotransformation reactions, supramolecular chemistry, organic metals, asymmetric synthesis; inorganic chemistry: organometallic ferrofluids, photochemistry and photophysics of biological systems, synthesis and reactivity of transition-metal complexes; physical and theoretical chemistry: solid and solution state nuclear magnetic resonance, chemical crystallography, photoelectron spectroscopy of solids and surfaces, Van der Waals complexes and intermolecular potentials; laser photochemistry; polymer chemistry (EPSRC national centre): synthesis and characterisation of dendritic, electroactive and liquid crystal types, structural and thermodynamic properties of polymers, quantum chemistry.

Entry requirements

Good MChem Honours degree, at least upper 2nd Class, in chemistry, physics, biochemistry or related subject required, or equivalent non-British qualification; applicants whose native language is not English must be proficient in written and spoken English test.

Doctoral Training Account studentships (EU students); Studentships funded through industry, research foundations, or bodies such as the European Commission; UK Research councils including EPSRC and BBSRC; Durham University offers a number of studentships to UK and EU applicants.
