The focus of the course is upon the modern and contemporary periods; it suits students that have strong interdisciplinary interests and wish to pursue them in a Maste'rs programme that seeks to understand the modern world through perspectives derived from the study of history, literature, culture and film; the course also offers the opportunity to pursue interests in subjects related to popular culture.

Entry requirements

A 2.2 Honours degree, or above, in a relevant subject.

Course modules

Modules: critical approaches to postgraduate study in the humanities and social sciences; research philosophies and methodologies; dissertation. 4 modules from: cultures of anatomy; women and popular culture; transgressive women: fatales, grrls and dangerous women; hearts of darkness: imagining the empire.; cinema, history and American national identity; the Victorian city: image and reality; remembering the holocaust: memory, identity and trauma in the twentieth century; popular culture 1880-1920; re-making the nation: propaganda, culture and identity in the second world war; verbal and visual landscapes: the art of eighteenth century poetry; the modern prison; the making of Liverpool; representations of Liverpool; African Americans and US. Popular culture, 1890-1945.; African Americans and US Popular culture since 1945; Hiroshima and the popular imagination; print and the people, 1850-1880; representing queenship; the pre-Raphaelites and their circle in literature and art; digital cultures in art and performance.

Assessment methods

Essays, critical reviews, critical diaries, presentations and research-based projects and a dissertation.
