This MA in Film and Media allows students to develop their critical and theoretical understanding of film and media through a range of approaches to the disciplines. Students acquire specialist subject knowledge, experience of advanced study, the practical skills necessary to undertake advanced research, and training in transferable research skills and methodologies. This programme is for those who have interests in film, contemporary media and popular culture and/or if students wish to pursue a research-based higher degree in this subject area in the future.

Entry requirements

To join this MA, applicants should have a minimum of a UK lower 2nd class Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. For overseas applicants, IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required. Alternatively, applicants may apply with appropriate professional qualifications and experience. This would normally include experience of working in a management and/or organisational context.

Course modules

Researching media and culture; film and media theory and analysis; dissertation project. Choose 4 of the following modules: Transnational media; European cinema; media and creative industries; reading new Asian cinemas; screen genres; cinema, history and national identity; media, culture and identities; women and popular culture; transgressive women: fatales, girls and dangerous women; men and supermen: masculinities in twentieth century narratives; popular culture, 1880-1920; out of the gutter: reading the contemporary graphic novel; Hiroshima and the popular imagination; print and the people, 1850-1880; rhythm and colour: literature, jazz and art; love actually? love, literature and popular culture; digital culture in art and performance; success in the digital economy.

Assessment methods

The programme culminates in the production of a written dissertation.
