This course focuses on the production of a substantial piece of work in a chosen specialist area of interest which is negotiated upon entry to the course.The course will equip students with extensive knowledge and understanding of the research process, research methods and methodology. This will ultimately translate into students designing, delivering and evaluating a research project from inception to successful completion. Students will have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate a deep and advanced knowledge of their specialist topic of study while engaging in independent research practice to a high standard.

Entry requirements

1st or 2.1 Honours degree in a cognate subject area or discipline. In exceptional circumstances, students with a 2.2 Honours degree classification may be admitted at the department's discretion. A sufficient command of the English language is required to complete the programme satisfactorily and to prepare and defend your thesis. Applicants whose 1st language is not English, or who originate from countries whose national language is not English, are required to demonstrate English language proficiency to a minimum standard of IELTS 7.0 or equivalent. Each applicant will be required to submit a brief research proposal outlining the intended focus of their MRes studies and demonstrating their enthusiasm and commitment towards the proposed subject.

Modules: advanced social science research methods (20 credits); dissertation proposal (childhood and youth); dissertation (childhood and youth).
