This programme provides a range of academic, professional and vocational knowledge, understanding, skills and values necessary to become a high quality and skilled teacher of post compulsory education; the programme aims to develop reflective and analytical skills as well as providing practical experience in planning effective lessons and learning strategies, hands-on classroom experience, and opportunities to further students' own subject knowledge; successful completion of this course leads to eligibility for qualified teacher learning and skills (QTLS) status.

Entry requirements

A 2.2 Honours degree in a relevant area; GCSE English language and mathematics at grade C or equivalent; satisfactory levels of information and communications technology competence and an appropriate range of practical skills related to applicants� specialist subject; a demonstrable interest in teaching within the curriculum area, for example: time spent in schools, knowledge of the chosen curriculum area, relevant practical experience; candidates take professional skills tests in literacy and numeracy. Applicants must meet the Department for Education's standards for physical and mental fitness to teach and clearance to work with children.

The developing teacher; the professional teacher; the practising teacher; the outstanding teacher; the specialist teacher - subject specialism; the specialist teacher - English (literacy); the specialist teacher - mathematics (numeracy); the specialist teacher - English as an additional language; the specialist teacher - special educational needs and disabilities.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through coursework and observations of teaching and training.
