Further Education and Training
This programme carries eligibility for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. Since April 2012, QLTS has been approved by the Department for Education as being equivalent to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) for schools and therefore there is the possibility of teaching in a school if your specialist subject is part of the curriculum for the given age range.
A PGCE in Further Education and Training will provide you with an endorsed qualification that can be used to teach or train in the Further Education / Lifelong Learning sector. It is suitable for those who are looking to enter teaching in the sector for the first time, as well as those who are already working in further education, a work-based learning setting, the voluntary sector or in public sector training such as the Police, Fire Service, Health Service and Prison Service. The programme will provide you with a wide range of practical skills and the insights to support you in becoming a confident and credible teacher or trainer of the highest quality.
To join this PGCE you should have a first or second class Honours degree from a UK university (or equivalent qualification) in a subject that is clearly part of the Further Education and Training curriculum. For applicants with a degree in a subject not related to the Further Education curriculum, other suitable Level 3 qualifications may be considered if these are supplemented by appropriate professional experience.
GCSE English and GCSE Mathematics at Grade C or Grade 4 or above, or equivalent, are required.
If you wish to select English / Literacy as your specialism, you will require GCSE English at Grade A or Grade 7 or above, or equivalent, together with an A Level, or equivalent, in a Humanities subject, such as English, Law or History.
If you wish to select Mathematics/Numeracy as your specialism, you will require GCSE Mathematics at Grade A or Grade 7 or above, or equivalent, together with an A Level, or equivalent, in a related subject, such as Mathematics, Physics, Statistics or Accounting.

An interview forms part of the selection process.
If you accept a formal offer from Edge Hill University you will be required to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure indicating that you meet the mandatory criteria of ‘Clearance to Work with Children and/or Vulnerable Adults’. Further information will be sent to you after you have firmly accepted an offer.

- PET4733 The Employable Teacher (SEND) (20 credits)
Assessment is through coursework and observations of teaching and training. The assessment strategies are varied but place a significant focus on developing knowledge and skills that will be useful in practice. Portfolios of evidence, drawn from the trainee’s practice, encourage the development of innovation in teaching and learning activities.
During the programme each trainee will be observed eight times. These observations will be shared between tutors and work-based mentors. This approach offers you feedback not only on generic aspects of teaching but also the teaching of your subject specialism.
There are no formal written examinations as part of the current assessment methods on this programme.
