Advanced Practice in Nursing

Students gain an in depth understanding of the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to practice at an advanced level, as well as the ability to critically appraise relevant health and social policy; students also acquire the knowledge and skills they need to address ethical and professional issues.

Entry requirements

Practising health or social care practitioner; Honours degree in science; or equivalent professional experience.

Course modules

Year 1: Exploring professional roles in practice, contemporary ethical and professional issues in healthcare, option. Year 2: Research methods, 2 optional modules. Year 3: Dissertation. Optional modules: Adults with incapacity; assessment, evaluation and support; child protection in context; child protection: risk to reality; contemporary ethical and professional issues in healthcare; critical thinking, analysis and writing; dissertation; effective learning and teaching in higher education; exploring professional roles in practice; independent and supplementary prescribing for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals; leadership; interprofessional learning and mentoring; managing performance for person centred services; politics, policy and practice; practising within a consultancy role; professional study and practices; research methods; safeguarding vulnerable individuals and families; pathophysiology and epidemiology in diabetes mellitus; preparation and practice of supervisors of midwives; work based learning portfolio 1; work based learning portfolio 2.
