Telecommunications Engineering

The programme provides a comprehensive understanding of modern communication technologies and the techniques used in telecommunication. Created in consultation with industry, this programme offers you the opportunity to gain relevant practical skills and to develop the expert knowledge needed to succeed in the telecommunications arena. Some of the key aspects covered by our programme include mobile telephony, satellite communication systems, optical systems and networks, and digital communications. Knowledge in these areas will allow you to successfully design and manage telecommunication systems and services.

Entry requirements

A minimum 2nd Class Honours degree from a UK university or equivalent in an appropriate engineering or science discipline. Substantial,relevant work experience may also be considered. Students whose 1st language is not English require an IELTS test with a score of at least 6.0 (no element less than 5.5) or TOEFL with a minimum score of 550 (213 for computer based test).

Course modules

Students complete 6 taught modules in trimester A and B; and an MSc project in trimester C. Trimester A: Wireless and mobile communications systems; digital communications; research methods; professional practice (delivered over trimesters A and B). Trimester B: Fundamentals of simulation of computer networks; optical comms and photonic networks; real-time digital signal processing.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include examinations and coursework; practical computing forms a significant part of assessment; this is accomplished through coursework and practical tests.

Sponsorship information

Some students are eligible for tuition fee support. The fees and financial support that are relevant to you depend on where you lived before coming to university. Scholarships of £1,000 are available to all international students; there are no special application forms for scholarships and decisions will be made on the basis of the information provided with the application forms.
