Students can choose a research project from a wide range of topics giving them an opportunity to focus their strengths and pursue their interests; students study in the fields of mechanical engineering and manufacturing to an advanced level; student study how to integrate and solve problems over a range of engineering areas and lead innovative design, development and application of new and cutting edge technology.

Modules include: Research design and methods; advanced computational fluid dynamics; structures and numerical analyses; advanced materials; advanced manufacturing technologies; viscous flow and heat transfer; dissertation.
Assessment is based on a variety of methods including portfolios, presentations and, for certain subjects, examinations.
