Social Anthropology

The course offers students from all disciplinary backgrounds the opportunity to build a solid foundation in social anthropology; its theoretical foundations; methodology and ethnographic diversity; students are expected to employ diverse resources to support original answers to important questions.

Entry requirements

2nd Class Honours degree in relevant discipline; degree is in an unrelated field may be considered subject to a qualifying examination; IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.5 in the written element and no individual element lower than 6.0) or equivalent.

Course modules

Compulsory course: anthropological theory and methodology examines basic concepts of social anthropology, the history of the discipline, and recent debates and basic issues of research methodology; options include: anthropology of the self; psychology and anthropology; anthropology and communication, food and anthropology; anthropology of health and medicine; gender and anthropology: sexuality and the body; gender and anthropology: theory and methods; symbolic systems; social anthropology of the Caribbean; anthropology of European Union; economic and political anthropology; anthropological issues in development; urban issues in anthropology; anthropology of art; visual anthropology; gender issues in development; anthropology and political ecology; Indian and peasant politics in Latin America.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by unseen examination for the core course; take-home papers and reports for each optional course; dissertation.
