Literary Studies: Pathway in Romantic and Victorian Literature and Culture

This pathway enhances students knowledge and understanding of the literature of 19th-century Britain and its relationship to a wide variety of cultural, intellectual, geographic and historical contexts. The core course which is at the centre of this pathway, 19th-century literature: Romanticisms engages students in the study of notions of Romanticism throughout the 19th-century, and consolidate their knowledge of Romantic and Victorian literature. In particular, students look at: some of the ways in which writers sought to understand Britain's place in European and global contexts, and in terms of the example of Classical civilisations; attempts to engage with radicalism and revolutionary change; the development of new forms and literary movements, and the adaptation of established genres to ensure the continuing importance of literature in a self-consciously modern age; notions of influence and intertextuality in the context of Romantic and Victorian writing. Core course and options will draw on a variety of medias (verbal, visual, filmic).
