Veterinary Rehabilitation Nursing

This course looks at three interesting aspects of the veterinary nurse during rehabilitation: Small Animal Complementary Therapies - Nurses are increasingly involved in developing and implementing the growing areas of complementary therapies used in the veterinary industry. This module will give a clear appreciation of the range of therapies: physiotherapy techniques, acupuncture, touch therapies, herbal and homeopathy treatments. Veterinary Hydrotherapy - This module will look at: pathology, principles of water based therapy, management of the hydrotherapy clinic, patient preparation, treatment and assessment, safety of the patient and contra-indications. Veterinary Analgesia and Pain Management - The recognition of pain in animals is a vital role of the veterinary nurse. This module will allow the nurse to understand the effects of analgesics and to develop techniques in recognising and assessing pain in animals. This module will include: pain pathways, pain assessment, analgesic drugs and nursing techniques.

Entry requirements

Candidates are required to be a Registered or Listed Veterinary Nurse. In addition, a minimum of a second class degree in veterinary nursing or an animal science subject; alternatively the Dip AVN (RCVS) with evidence of success in level 6 study.

Course modules

Companion animal life care; companion animal behaviour; client support; small animal complementary therapies; veterinary hydrotherapy; veterinary analgesia and pain management; veterinary oncology - pathophysiology and diagnostic support; veterinary oncology - treatment and nursing care; research project.

Assessment methods

Modules will be assessed by a range of methods, including assignments end of module examination, and practical OPSE exams. Support in assessment skills is available for those who have not sat an examination recently.
