Smart Grid Demand Management

The course has been designed to progress students with an electrical or mechanical engineering background to become an expert in the understanding of a smart grid. The course covers energy resources (fossil and renewable), conversion technologies, electrical power generation, energy storage technologies, demand management and energy economics.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree (2.1) in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or physics, or a closely related subject. Equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered. Alternative backgrounds, such as vocational training complemented with sufficient relevant industrial experience and continued professional development will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Applicants not from a UK Border Agency (UKBA) recognised English speaking country, will need to provide evidence of English language ability. If the 1st degree was taught in English, a letter from them confirming this will be sufficient. Otherwise the minimum requirement for English language is IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill.

Course modules

Semester 1: foundations of energy; renewable energy technologies; electrical power systems; environmental and energy economics. Semester 2: smart grid modeling; distributed generation; demand management and energy storage; critical analysis and research preparation; MSc Project.
