This course is designed to meet the needs of those who wish to explore philosophical issues either as a development of undergraduate study or following a first degree in suitable subject other than philosophy; this carefully-focused programme both deepens students' earlier philosophical work and functions as a demanding but effective introduction to this subject; it provides opportunities to consider a range of philosophical topics including contemporary and ancient philosophy, philosophy of religion, ethics and politics.
An Honours degree, (normally 2.1 or above) or equivalent, in an appropriate subject; for applicants whose 1st language is not English, the College requires: IELTS score of at least 6.5, with no less than 6.5 in each of listening, speaking, reading and writing; TOEFL internet based test score of 92 with no less than 23 in each of listening, speaking, reading and writing; Pearson Test of English Academic score of 60 overall with no less than 55 in any component.
Modules include: Knowledge and reality; ethics; political philosophy. Optional modules: introduction to philosophy; logic and language; mind and psychology; reason and religion; dissertation.
Assessment is by a combination of coursework tasks completed during or shortly after the period of module teaching and an end of year essay for each module studied. The coursework tasks vary and could include reviews, and reports as well as essays. In addition, applicants complete a 12-15,000 word dissertation on a research topic agreed with their supervisor.
