Philosophy in Education
This course is aimed specifically at teachers of philosophy in schools, particularly those who deliver, or wish to deliver, the AQA A level in philosophy; the course combines taught modules carefully focused on topics on the A level syllabus with a module on teaching philosophy, which includes a qualification in SAPERE's philosophy for children methodology; it is suitable both for those with previous education in philosophy, and those seeking a rigorous introduction.
An Honours degree, (normally 2.1 or above) or equivalent, in an appropriate subject; for applicants whose 1st language is not English, the College requires: IELTS score of at least 6.5, with no less than 6.5 in each of listening, speaking, reading and writing; TOEFL internet based test score of 92 with no less than 23 in each of listening, speaking, reading and writing; Pearson Test of English Academic score of 60 overall with no less than 55 in any component.
Modules include: Knowledge and reality; teaching philosophy. Options include: ethics; political philosophy; reason and religion; logic and language; mind and psychology; dissertation.
Assessment for the topic based modules is by a combination of coursework tasks completed during or shortly after the period of module teaching and an end of year essay for each module studied. The coursework tasks vary and could include reviews and reports as well as essays. Teaching Philosophy is assessed by a variety of coursework tasks, which will include exercises in argument, reflection on personal practice, and designing a Philosophy for Children enquiry. In addition, applicants complete a 12-15,000 word dissertation on a research topic agreed with their supervisor.
