Christian Spirituality

This course provides an opportunity to examine the spiritual traditions of Christianity in their historical and contemporary forms, and to develop the ability to understand and evaluate the language, ideas and forms of Christian spirituality; the focus is on Christianity in its western development; the opening module, foundations for the study of spirituality, provides a foundation for the interdisciplinary academic study of spirituality; it looks critically at definitions of spirituality, investigates the theoretical issues surrounding religious experience and introduces methods for the academic study of spirituality, including how to read spiritual texts; students apply such methods to a spiritual classic text; options allows students to follow certain personal interests.

Entry requirements

A 1st or 2nd class Honours degree, or equivalent, either in Theology or in another subject appropriate to the study of Christian spirituality; for applicants whose 1st language is not English, the College requires: IELTS score of at least 6.5, with no less than 6.5 in each of listening, speaking, reading and writing; TOEFL internet based test score of 92 with no less than 23 in each of listening, speaking, reading and writing; Pearson Test of English Academic score of 60 overall with no less than 55 in any component.

Course modules

Modules include: Foundations for the study of Christian spirituality. Optional modules: patterns of spiritual growth and personal transformation; the Franciscan spiritual tradition; spiritual direction in the tradition of Ignatius of Loyola; spirituality and society.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by a combination of coursework tasks completed during or shortly after the module teaching, and an end-of-year essay. Depending on the module choices, tasks may include book reviews, dictionary articles, exegesis and seminar presentations as well as essays. Applicants also complete a 12-15,000 word dissertation.
