This programme explores questions such as: what is the good life; how should we act; how do we assess difficult moral situations; what does moral living require of us, both in terms of who we are as human beings and as professionals; in searching for answers, students are introduced to different schools of ethics; they learn how to articulate new ethical dilemmas and formulate coherent moral arguments; the programme relates the discourse of ethics to questions raised in contemporary society; its focus is prompted by the emergence of new and complex ethical questions which arise from cultural, social and technological changes in the modern world.
An Honours degree (normally 2.1 or above) or equivalent, in an appropriate subject. It is not essential for the 1st degree to be in philosophy or theology; for applicants whose 1st language is not English, the College requires: IELTS score of at least 6.5, with no less than 6.5 in each of listening, speaking, reading and writing; TOEFL internet based test score of 92 with no less than 23 in each of listening, speaking, reading and writing; Pearson Test of English Academic score of 60 overall with no less than 55 in any component.
Modules includes: Foundations of ethics; moral development, reasoning and decision making; optional modules (choose 2): ethical issues today; bioethics and sexual ethics; business ethics; morality and spirituality; dissertation.
Assessment is by a combination of coursework tasks completed during or shortly after the period of module teaching and an end of year essay for each module. Coursework tasks can include literature reviews, issue reports, essays and seminar presentations. Students also complete a 12-15,000 word dissertation on a research topic agreed with their supervisor.
