Engineering Geology for Ground Models
This course provides quantitative knowledge of the behaviour of rock, soil, water and gas, as materials and en masse in both their uncontaminated and contaminated states.
An Honours degree (minimum 2.1) or overseas equivalent; others with substantial relevant industrial and professional experience may also be considered; all applicants whose 1st language is not English require: GCSE, IGCSE, GCE O-level or equivalent at grade C; or Cambridge certificate of proficiency in English (CPE) at grade C; or IELTS score of 7.0 with a score of 6.5 or better in the written and speaking section; or TOEFL paper minimum score of 610 (test of written English (TWE) of 4.5 or more); or TOEFL computer minimum score of 250 (TWE of 4.5 or more); or TOEFL internet minimum score of 100 overall, including a minimum of 24 in the written section and a minimum of 22 in the speaking section.
Modules include: Applied engineering geology coursework; applied engineering geology fieldwork; applied soil mechanics; basic competences in engineering geology; basic soil mechanics; case histories and practice in engineering geology; chemical concepts for hydrogeology in contaminated land; contaminated land and groundwater; engineering geology of soils and rocks; geotechnical processes; GIS for ground models; ground investigation; hazard quantification and risk analysis for ground engineering; hydrogeological principles; laboratory and field techniques in engineering geology; laboratory work in soil mechanics; practical work in rock mechanics; professional practice in engineering geology; rock excavation and support; rock strength and failure; waste management and landfill engineering; dissertation; plus add-on modules: business management; sustainable development.
Assessment includes examinations and a dissertation.
