General Structural Engineering

The course provides training in the analysis, design and assessment of structures under conventional loading conditions.It covers a broad spectrum of structural engineering issues specifically for civil engineering structures, with comprehensive coverage of topics related to the mechanics and design of structures made from steel and/or concrete. It also covers topics on advanced analytical and numerical techniques.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree (minimum 2.1) in an appropriate subject or overseas equivalent; special cases, based on relevant experience, may be made in some circumstances; all applicants whose 1st language is not English require: GCSE, IGCSE, GCE O-level or equivalent at grade C; or Cambridge certificate of proficiency in English (CPE) at grade C; or IELTS score of 7.0 with a score of 6.5 or better in the written and speaking section; or TOEFL paper minimum score of 610 (test of written English (TWE) of 4.5 or more); or TOEFL computer minimum score of 250 (TWE of 4.5 or more); or TOEFL internet minimum score of 100 overall, including a minimum of 24 in the written section and a minimum of 22 in the speaking section.

Modules include: Concrete materials; cold-formed steel design; design and construction; design of steel bridges; design of steel buildings; finite element analysis; non-linear structural analysis; plated structures; prestressed concrete; reinforced concrete 1; reinforced concrete 2; steel components; structural dynamics; structural stability; structural steel technology; theory of plates; theory of shells; time and temperature-dependent behaviour of concrete structures.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by examination and coursework, followed by a 5 month period involving 1 or more design projects and/or a research dissertation.
