Hydrology and Water Resources Management
This course is career-oriented and covers both theoretical background and practical design considerations; lectures are given mainly by full-time staff but important contributions are made by visiting professors and guest lecturers who are eminent industrialists; many students continue their studies to undertake research towards a PhD; hydrology is strongly multidisciplinary, and the course includes a basic treatment of relevant physical and life sciences, mathematical sciences, and systems analysis; a 1-week study tour is a compulsory part of the course.
A UK Honours degree (minimum 2.1) in a relevant subject or overseas equivalent; special cases, based on relevant experience, may be made in some circumstances; all applicants whose 1st language is not English require: GCSE, IGCSE, GCE O-level or equivalent at grade C; or Cambridge certificate of proficiency in English (CPE) at grade C; or IELTS score of 7.0 with a score of 6.5 or better in the written and speaking section; or TOEFL paper minimum score of 610 (test of written English (TWE) of 4.5 or more); or TOEFL computer minimum score of 250 (TWE of 4.5 or more); or TOEFL internet minimum score of 100 overall, including a minimum of 24 in the written section and a minimum of 22 in the speaking section.
Modules include: Contaminated land and groundwater; dissertation; environmental fluid mechanics; environmental management in developing countries; groundwater flow and quality modelling; hydrogeology and groundwater; hydrological processes; hydroinformatics; hydrometry; irrigation; mathematical and statistical modelling; meteorology and climate change; rainfall run-off modelling and flood hydrology; stochastic hydrology; study tour; urban hydrology and urban drainage; water quality modelling; water resources management; plus add-on modules: business management; sustainable development; design project.
Assessment is by dissertation.
