Medical Ultrasound (Vascular)
The course provides the theoretical basis of medical ultrasound and ultrasound scanning and diagnostic skills.
An Honours degree (minimum 2.2) in medicine (with no additional experience required) or a biological; engineering; or physical science subject (with ability to demonstrate relevant experience); non-graduates with 3 years� work experience may also be considered, subject to a special qualifying examination; candidates with a medical background should note that GMC registration is not required for the course; students registering for the part-time course must be working at least 3 days per week in an ultrasound clinic for the duration of the course. All applicants whose 1st language is not English require: GCSE, IGCSE, GCE O-level or equivalent at grade C; or Cambridge certificate of proficiency in English (CPE) at grade C; or IELTS score of 7.0 with a score of 6.5 or better in the written and speaking section; or TOEFL paper minimum score of 610 (test of written English (TWE) of 4.5 or more); or TOEFL computer minimum score of 250 (TWE of 4.5 or more); or TOEFL internet minimum score of 100 overall, including a minimum of 24 in the written section and a minimum of 22 in the speaking section.
Modules include: Fundamentals of ultrasound wave motion and propagation; abdominal/cardiac anatomy; the ultrasound field; transducers: theory and design; haemodynamics/Doppler ultrasound; quality assurance and acoustic output measurements; bioeffects and potential hazards; therapeutic ultrasound; image processing, recording and storage techniques; principles of imaging; contrast ultrasound; 3-dimensional imaging; new technical developments; speciality modules and clinical attachment: speciality subjects: echocardiography; radiological ultrasound; or vascular ultrasonography; project.
Assessment is by oral, practical and written examinations, and a research project dissertation.
