The course offers options in areas of applied mathematics: continuum mechanics; non-linear dynamics; and numerical analysis or advanced mathematical methods.
An Honours degree (2.1 or above) in mathematics or related subject, or overseas equivalent; all applicants whose 1st language is not English require: GCSE, IGCSE, GCE O-level or equivalent at grade C; or Cambridge certificate of proficiency in English (CPE) at grade C; or IELTS score of 7.0 with a score of 6.5 or better in the written and speaking section; or TOEFL paper minimum score of 610 (test of written English (TWE) of 4.5 or more); or TOEFL computer minimum score of 250 (TWE of 4.5 or more); or TOEFL internet minimum score of 100 overall, including a minimum of 24 in the written section and a minimum of 22 in the speaking section.
Modules include: Continuum mechanics: high reynolds number flow and boundary layer theory; inviscid flow; hydrodynamic stability; mathematical biology; viscous flow; vortex mechanics; waves; (non-linear dynamics): bifurcation theory; chaos and predictability; dynamics and symmetry; geometry, mechanics and symmetry; introduction to chaos; (numerical analysis and advanced mathematical methods): advanced ordinary differential equations; advanced techniques for differential and integral equations; homogenisation theory for partial differential equations; mathematical theory of the finite element method; numerical solution of ordinary differential equations; techniques for complex variable theory, matched asymptotic expansions in applied mathematics.
Assessment methods include examinations and a project.
