Optics and Photonics

This course includes a substantial amount of laboratory work, with experiments ranging from introductions to major optical tools and techniques to designing and building a working optical system.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree (2.1 or above) in physics; mathematics or electrical engineering, or for candidates who show other evidence of appropriate qualifications; applications must be made direct to erasmus mundus. All applicants whose 1st language is not English require: GCSE, IGCSE, GCE O-level or equivalent at grade C; or Cambridge certificate of proficiency in English (CPE) at grade C; or IELTS score of 7.0 with a score of 6.5 or better in the written and speaking section; or TOEFL paper minimum score of 610 (test of written English (TWE) of 4.5 or more); or TOEFL computer minimum score of 250 (TWE of 4.5 or more); or TOEFL internet minimum score of 100 overall, including a minimum of 24 in the written section and a minimum of 22 in the speaking section.

Course modules

Modules include: Imaging; optical communications physics; lasers; optical measurement and devices; laboratory work; self-study project; 4 month research project. Optional modules: biomedical optics; laser optics; laser technology; non-linear optics; fibre technology; optical design; optical design laboratory; optical displays; optoelectronic components and devices; photonics structures; quantum optics.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on written examinations; laboratory work; oral presentations and a dissertation.
